Ramblings of a Disorientated Mind

The ramblings, and occasional sanities, of a 20-something geekess from the UK

Accents

The other day Monkey, Myera, Andy and I were chatting as friends do and we got, some how, onto accents. I’ve long known that parts of my speech are a little different than other peoples, and Monkey is constantly telling me off for my pronunciation of ‘Phoenix’, but I’d never exactly known how much different until we started talking about this the other day. Even Myera said it was strange!

Apparently, not only do I have a very prevalent Dorset accent [elongated vowels occasionally and missing 't's], but I have hints of Australian [the 'o' in 'don't'], Kiwi [some 'a' sounds], cockney, Scottish, Welsh and Bristonian [hard 'a' when talking about 'bath' the place]. In addition to this I, apparently, drop my ‘t’s a hell of a lot or otherwise just imply them, drop ‘th’ at the beginning of words, imply silent ‘h’s [in 'what' or 'phoenix' for example] and mispronounce certain words [namely 'phoenix' and 'Orleans'].

I honestly don’t really know where most of this has come from. Obviously the Dorset is either from my mum or my maternal grandparents, and I know the ‘phoenix’ and ‘Orleans’ thing is from my dad. I expect some of the welsh is from my Nan, but the rest of it? No clue. I’ve never been to Australasia, Scotland, Bristol nor lived in London. Maybe I am or was just really susceptible to accents.

All I know is that it gets kinda interesting when ‘that’ turns into ‘a[t]‘, and I don’t think even the mathematician/ linguist from threshold could work out where I was from.

Odd

It’s strange you know. I have approximately 4 hours of free time between my shifts and then another 6 or so after, and yet I seem to do most of my writing during the 1 hour and 30 mins I spend on the bus. Hell, I’m even writing this on my way back to Poole.

I don’t really know why this is because I hate typing on the zaurus. It’s small and makes my hand ache from holding the stylus and I always loads of mistakes, and it has the shortest battery life ever.

I suppose the thing is that the bus is usually quiet when I get on, and there are no distractions for me to use as procrastination excuses. Even though I created another user on my home PC designed especially for writing, I still find things on my desk to play with, or some chore that demands my attention [yes, I frequently do house work when I should be writing].

I read somewhere once, something that said every writer has his or her own process. I think it was actually referring to the process of writing a story [ie, notes vs vague idea], but the concept here I think is the same. Some people say they write best with a typewriter in the garden shed, some are quite happy banging away on a laptop in the spare room. Me? I guess I just write best on the bus.

Ask the Audience

I’m really bored. I would like to do some writing, but what on? is the question I can seem to answer. So I’d love for y’all to leave me a comment with an idea for something I could write on. I don’t really have any specialized subjects, and I don’t even mind what sort of writing you suggest, be it a story or an essay/ article. Just give me something to write on, please?

Spotlight on: Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon is a writer, mostly. He’s also directed and produced three very famous TV shows: one about a cheerleader who kills vampires; one about a good, if broody, vampire and one about a little ship trying to keep flying. So, more accurately, Joss Whedon might be known as a creator.

Unknowingly at the time, I first came across Whedon’s work while watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a rave new sci-fi/ fantasy/ thriller/ horror TV show that my brother and his girlfriend where obsessing about. I liked the show, but didn’t really become hooked until the last few seasons when I watched it with said girlfriend. Time passed and I’d heard some mention of a spin-off series, Angel, but it was always on at an annoying time so I never got to see much of it. Then, in 2003, a year after it was canceled, Firefly came to the UK and I fell instantly and completely in love with it. Also unbeknownst to me until I started researching for this article, I’d found his work in other places as well, notably Titan A.E. and Atlantis: The Lost Empire – both firm favorites with me, especially Titan A.E., a film I could watch forever.

What does Joss and his work mean to me?
First the man: From what I’ve read [and since I got a little obsessed with this article I've read a fair amount] Whedon is a nice guy. He’s honest about what he’s done and modest about what he’s achieved and he’s a feminist involved with Equality Now, which is a double plus. Whedon is also a great source of inspiration to me. His energy and humor and, well, Joss-ness make me feel I can do anything with what I write. I’ll admit that sometimes I fulfill the stereotypical angst-y struggling writer, but when I think of his work, I get filled with a great sense of hope and achievement.
His work, mainly with Firefly and Serenity, also makes me feel good. The sense of family and comradeship that emanates from the TV screen when I watch the episodes or movie makes me feel happy, privileged and, in some strange way, included.

But mostly I feel enthused by him and what he’s done, and it makes me think ‘If he can do it, so can I’

A Scanner Darkly

Year: 2006
Genre: Sci-Fi/ Animation/ Thriller

This film basically covers the day-to-day activities of an LA narcotics cop who takes the very drug he’s trying to stop others from getting hooked on, and his loss of identity he experiences as a result.

I didn’t like this film. While the ‘graphic novel’ style was intriguing, it didn’t really do much to alleviate the confusing plot, nor the slow build up to what was actually turned out to be an interesting conclusion. I haven’t read the book of the same name [written by Phillip K Dick] but I think I would like to now, to see how the film compares or if the plot is explained fuller.

Also, after reading a great many comments on this film on IMDB.com, I would have to admit that maybe I don’t like this film as much as I could do, because I simply don’t ‘get’ the drug related undertones. Even so, I’d still give it just 1/5

Small set.

Crayons have brands? I thought they just accumulated by themselves…

Me + gluten = depression?

I’m about a week into this going-back-to-eating-gluten thing and aside from the many and various physical side effects [bloating, acid reflux, headaches, tight chest, vanishing voice and thick phlemg to name a few], I’m wondering if there are any emotional side effects. All week I felt like I wasn’t able to do anything. I felt like my brain was all fuzzy, and I was very listless. Nothing interested me and what did, I couldn’t seem to focus on for long and I kept bursting into tears for no apparent reason.

I have been reminded very much of the time I spent at uni, where I pretty much lived on pasta and toast. During that time I was… Well, I suppos the only way I can describe it, is that I seemed to be deeply deppressed with no reason. During the last few weeks of the term I stopped doing anything. I stopped going to classes, I stopped going to my clubs, I stopped going outside my room pretty much full-stop and eventually I stopped doing anything but sitting on my bed and stairing into space or randomly bursting into tears.

I’m not saying that my diet nessisarily had anything to do with that state of affairs. Nor am I saying that I’m going to turn into that person again [at least, I hope not]. All I’m saying is it’s interesting the simmilary between the two events.

random thoughts keep occuring to me, randomly.

I think I discovered the reson for muzack in shops – it’s to prevent authors from evesdropping on other people’s conversation.

Also, Andy had a long talk last night about why he doesn’t like my storied. according to him they are episodical and character driven. He maintains this isn’t nessisarily a bad thing, just not what he’s into. I don’t know. maybe I should pass out the same story to all my friends, force them to read it and force them to tell me what they thought.

I think teachers still scare me. Even if they aren’t my own. My brother’s mate Bret is the sole exception to this rule. For example, I never really know what to say when the headmistress talks to me, and this morning one of the other teachers came to yell at the kids who were late as they ran up the road. At one point I was looking away from him, concentrating on something else when he yelled to someone. I junped, but rolled a successful willpower check to stop from saying ‘sorry sir!’

Is it okay to have ankle hangers if you’re a male over 50 wearing suit trousers?
