I was browsing DeviantArt the other day and I came accross the above stunning image. First I just wanted to share it with everyone. But then I got thinking. The artist says it’s a lamp, so that’s why she called it ‘Micro-cosmos’ – the tiny planets orbiting their tiny sun.
When we’re children, we’re convinced that the world does in fact revolve around us, that everyone knows who we are, and everything about us. As we get older, we’re supposed to grow out of this world view. But do we really?
It seems to me sometimes that the majority of people, while maybe not considering them selves the centre on the universe and still pretty damn close to it. It constantly surprises me4 the amount of people who talk to me at work, and instantly expect me to either know what garments they have at home, or their measurements or who ‘Jane’ is. I’m not talking just younger people, I’m talking those in their 40′s upwards.
The lamp in the photo is more like a web, or network of intersecting points. Part of me thinks the world might well be a better place if people thought of themselves as part of a collective, rather than the centre of the universe. The whole world as a team, everyone making life a little better for those around them and themselves. Maybe we’re all too self-centred for that idea to work, gods knows it’s been tried, but ah well, a girl can dream right?
